SUMMARY: The Basic Books Group is a division of Hachette Book Group dedicated to making the world smarter by publishing works of serious non-fiction by expert authors. The group includes Basic Books, Seal Press, PublicAffairs, Bold Type Books, Basic Venture, and Basic Liberty. We are seeking a dynamic, experienced, and digitally savvy Marketing Director to develop, lead, and oversee all aspects of marketing strategy for roughly one hundred non-fiction titles per year, as well as extensive backlist marketing initiatives. The Marketing Director will manage the annual marketing budget in conjunction with the Publicity Director; interface with Hachette’s sales department on all aspects of the go-to-market process and on frontlist and backlist promotions; actively participate in the acquisitions process; and manage the marketing department team. The successful candidate will have a strong background in working with top experts and a passion for bringing a diverse range of serious ideas to a wide audience of readers and consumers. This position reports to the President and Publisher, Basic Books Group. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* Develop and oversee title-specific marketing campaigns across Basic Books Group’s six imprints, serving as a primary point of contact for authors and agents through the entire campaign cycle.
- Develop and execute preorder campaigns, advertising plans, influencer and organizational partnerships, and platform-specific social media strategies for relevant titles to drive sales.
- Develop and oversee Basic Books Group’s academic marketing strategy.
- Develop and execute strategic plans for ongoing marketing on Basic Books Group’s backlist.
- Develop programs for direct-to-consumer outreach in core publishing categories in concert with Hachette’s central marketing strategy department.
- Develop and execute brand marketing initiatives, including for imprint-specific and group-wide social media channels, newsletters, and websites, to increase brand awareness, audience growth, and sales.
- Supervise the marketing department (currently comprising two marketing managers and a marketing assistant).
- Formulate and execute best practices for metadata on both frontlist and backlist titles.
- Edit and oversee process for fact sheets and in-house materials for all sales meetings, and oversee preparation for presentations to sales department.
- Review and provide feedback on proposals in acquisitions meetings.
- Interact with sales department on all promotions.
- Work with the special sales team to develop organizational sales opportunities.
- Manage Basic Books Group’s presence at trade and regional shows and academic conferences.
- Participate in inventory and first print decisions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:* 8+ years of marketing experience, with a record of success in developing successful marketing campaigns for serious non-fiction titles, including effective preorder and digital marketing campaigns.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, creatively, and proactively about title-specific campaigns and imprint-level initiatives.
- Strong leadership and budget management skills, and experience managing and mentoring staff effectively.
- Robust understanding of social media marketing, metadata and keywords best practices, and SEO.
- Thirst for knowledge about consumers and the market and interest in exploring new audiences, platforms, and tactics for reaching readers.
- High level of professionalism and excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Impeccable organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment and to work effectively and collaboratively in a team setting.
- Broad familiarity with, and genuine interest in, nonfiction subject areas and publishing categories.
- Demonstrated understanding of and an appreciation for the ideas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The compensation for this position is $110,000-$140,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
