The American Kennel Club is looking for a Senior Community Manager who lives and breathes dogs and understands the deep bond they bring to our lives. In this role, you’ll guide how millions of dog lovers connect with AKC across social platforms, online communities, and emerging digital spaces. You’ll shape our community strategy, lead engagement efforts, and build meaningful relationships with the people who make AKC what it is: passionate dog owners, breeders, handlers, and fans.

This position blends strategic leadership with hands-on execution. You’ll be the voice of AKC in the digital world, fostering a friendly, inclusive, and knowledgeable environment where dog lovers feel seen, supported, and inspired.

Primary Job Duties Include

  • Own and actively evolve AKC’s community management strategy across social platforms, online communities, and emerging digital spaces, balancing long‑term vision with day‑to‑day execution.

  • Build, implement, and continuously refine scalable engagement frameworks that drive community growth, retention, and deeper audience connection.

  • Lead hands‑on community engagement across AKC’s social channels, modeling best‑in‑class interactions while setting standards for the broader team.

  • Define and apply tone‑of‑voice guidelines and engagement best practices, ensuring consistency while adapting messaging to platform‑specific norms.

  • Monitor community conversations and sentiment in real time, translating insights into both immediate responses and longer‑term strategic recommendations.

  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and well‑moderated community environment by personally contributing to moderation efforts and owning escalation protocols.

  • Manage and nurture relationships with dog‑focused influencers and creators, supporting campaign execution while identifying new partnership opportunities.

  • Lead the development and hands‑on management of AKC’s Social Ambassador Program, from recruitment and onboarding to ongoing engagement and performance.

  • Own AKC’s Reddit presence, including direct participation in subreddit engagement, moderation, AMAs, and community‑led initiatives.

  • Partner closely with social, content, and marketing teams, bringing frontline community insights into campaign planning, content development, and execution.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Competency Requirements

  • Experience in community management, social media, or digital marketing, ideally with consumer‑facing brands.

  • Proven success developing and executing community strategies for large, active audiences.

  • Deep understanding of dog culture, dog ownership, and the role dogs play in people’s lives.

  • Experience managing influencers, creators, and ambassador programs.

  • Exceptional written communication skills with the ability to adapt tone across platforms while staying warm and approachable.

  • Strong analytical skills and experience with social listening and community management tools.

  • Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable leading cross‑functional initiatives.

The salary range for this position in New York City is $95,000-105,000/year; however salary offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge and location.
