What We Can Achieve Together:

The Senior Media Relations Manager creates, manages and implements marketing and media relations strategies, plans, and tactics focused on advancing the strategic media and public relations goals for the Nature Conservancy in New York. They will be part of a marketing and communications team in New York and work closely and collaboratively with our Global media team and others across our global organization to maximize media opportunities and coverage in top outlets in the New York media market. They will also enhance our reputation and visibility by aligning us with influential cultural institutions, events and social influencers.

We’re Looking for You:

The Senior Media Relations Manager is responsible for creating, managing and implementing media, influencer, speaking events and partnerships to elevate our brand, conservation priorities, spokespeople and subject matter experts. This work is part of the larger Communications and Marketing team’s focus on increasing awareness of TNC, inspiring new partnerships, expanding our influence and motivating new supporters.

Responsibilities & Scope

  • Deeply understanding our Conservation and Fundraising priorities and creating a comprehensive PR plan to help achieve our goals while plugging into business, cultural and societal trends.
  • Creating and executing media relations strategies to advance the organization’s goals including: analyzing media coverage and public sentiment to refine messaging and strategy, identifying media opportunities and proactively developing pitches in collaboration with the conservation and marketing team, cultivating and managing relationships with key media outlets across print, broadcast, audio and digital media, drafting talking points and briefing TNC’s spokespeople, increasing media coverage in key outlets.
  • Writing well-crafted, thoughtfully researched, compelling and effective media pitches, backgrounders, press releases, bylines and op-eds.
  • Implementing strategies to expand the visibility of the Executive Director and other key New York leaders in NY media outlets that reach key audiences.
  • Acting as a strategic advisor to senior leadership on reputational opportunities and risks in the media landscape and serving as the organization’s primary media liaison in New York.
  • Managing crisis communications and rapid response efforts in coordination with global and national teams, ensuring timely and effective messaging.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in New York’s business, cultural, and civic communities to enhance TNC’s visibility and credibility.
  • Leveraging New York City’s unique media, cultural, and influencer ecosystem to position TNC as a thought leader in conservation and climate action.
  • Identifying and securing speaking opportunities for our New York leaders at relevant industry and cultural events throughout NY and partnership opportunities with New York institutions our key audiences know and trust to help increase our visibility and influence
  • Identifying and engaging with influencers who authentically align with The Nature Conservancy’s brand and can help enhance our visibility and influence
  • Submitting our work and our leaders for relevant awards to help advance our brand recognition and reputation
  • Setting performance benchmarks and tracking and analyzing progress in partnership with our analytics lead
  • Occasional travel is required for business meetings and events, trainings, and/or team retreats and meetings.
  • May supervise one or more professional staff and communications agency.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of 8 years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience in project management, developing communications, media and engagement strategies and measuring results.
  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships.
  • Experience supervising staff and team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience gaining the trust of subject matter experts at all levels
  • Ability to persuasively convey the mission of The Nature Conservancy to diverse groups including donors, board members, and the public.
  • Experience writing for Executives
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience cultivating and managing media and stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience managing and implementing media strategies and measuring results
  • Experience developing media relations networks
  • PR agency experience and/or cultivating and managing client relationships within a PR setting
  • Experience supervising staff and team.
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in media and influencer relations
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in relevant discipline
  • Experience leading or managing projects
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and multilingual communication skills, with preference for Spanish proficiency.
  • Fosters an environment of creativity and professional growth.

Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $124,270 . This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
