We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced New York City-based Key Relationship Manager to join Buro Happold. You will play a pivotal role in driving the growth and expansion of our business, identifying and securing new strategic partnerships, fostering Client and Collaborator relationships, and exploring market opportunities.

This role is responsible for ensuring that Buro Happold and our people are positioned in the minds of Clients and Collaborators in the best possible light, across our disciplines, service offers, markets, and sectors.

We have grown our business significantly across the US region, creating a design and advisory team that generates $100m per annum in fees. Our strategy is to continue to grow and double our size in the next 5 years to +$200M.

Your next role

Our New York office is the backbone of our US business, generating circa 50% of current revenue. The opportunity is to lead the growth of our business in New York, generating opportunities and pursuits, through Key Client Relationship management and development. Our focus is on Global Clients and Collaborator (locally connected) selling integrated services across our Engineering Design and Advisory services.

Working alongside our Mid-Atlantic Market Lead, partners, office directors, marketing and other stakeholders to develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy for our New York office aligned with Buro Happold’s goals and objectives. Identify new market segments, potential clients, and partnership opportunities to drive revenue growth. As part of this role, you will integrate with our global business network of skills and decades of experience to build positive Client and Collaborator relationships.

Your key duties

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position includes the following:

  • Key Account Management: Manage and develop important Key Client and Collaborator relationships with guidance from the NYC Market Leader and other Senior Leadership. Clients and Collaborators will include Public Entities (NYCEDC), Private Corporate Organizations (FAMGA), Universities, Cultural Institutions, Science and Healthcare Organizations, Airports, Commercial Developers in Office, Residential, Luxury Retail and Hospitality. In collaboration with the partners and other work winners, build and maintain strong relationships with our Key Clients and Collaborators, identify and build relationships with relevant decision-makers and influencers within the organizations, and enable effective two-way flow of information and resolution of issues. Plan and Implement a Key Client and Collaborator strategy for:
    • Existing major Clients and Collaborators, where growing these relationships, identifying opportunities and pursuits, cross selling our breath of skills and utilizing account management skills are critical.
    • New Major Clients and Collaborators where your role will be to “open the door” for Buro Happold senior leadership.
  • Sell Client Propositions: Use personal expertise to identify the breadth of services offered by Buro Happold that meets the client's needs.
  • Promoting Client Focus: Collaborate internally and work as the KRM champion across our integrated discipline teams to build strong external Client and Collaborator relationships.
  • Key Relationship Management (KRM) Data: Track and analyze business development activities, revenue generation, and client conversion rates. Provide regular reports, forecasts, and insights to senior management to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Market Research and Analysis: Conduct market research and analysis to identify emerging trends, market demands, and competitive landscapes. Use this information to develop actionable strategies for business development and growth.
  • Industry Networking: Actively participate in industry events, conferences, and trade shows to expand professional networks, stay updated with industry trends, and identify potential business opportunities.
  • Revenue Forecasting and Reporting: Track and analyze business development activities, revenue generation, and client conversion rates. Provide regular reports, forecasts, and insights to senior management to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Collaboration and Team Leadership: Work closely with internal teams, including engineering, marketing, and operations, to align business development initiatives with overall company strategies. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.

Your skills and experience

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, Marketing, Engineering, Architecture, Construction, or related field.
  • Proven experience of 15+ years in business development or sales within the AEC industry.
  • Track record of successfully supporting complex deals and achieving revenue targets.
  • Business Acumen: Strong understanding of engineering industry dynamics, market trends, and competitive landscapes. Ability to analyze data, identify opportunities, and make strategic business decisions.
  • Communication and Negotiation Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively present proposals, help negotiate deals, and build rapport with clients and stakeholders.
  • Relationship Building: Proven ability to build and maintain long-term relationships with clients and partners. A strong network within the AEC industry.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically, identify growth opportunities, and develop innovative business development strategies. Proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Leadership and Collaboration: Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and guide cross-functional teams. A collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Results Orientation: Proven track record of meeting and exceeding business development targets. Results-driven mindset with a focus on achieving measurable outcomes.

What we offer

  • Salary range of $175,000 - $230,000. This will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience
