COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
The Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity (GOEO) is looking for a proactive, seasoned, and passionate Public Information & Communications Manager to join its marketing and communications team. Communications plays a critical role in advancing the office’s role through timely, transparent, and strategic engagement with the public and key stakeholders. Under general guidance and direction of the GOEO Marketing and Communications Director, this position requires an individual who excels at proactive communications planning, strategic storytelling, media engagement, and serving as a public information officer. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking communicator who can anticipate information needs, craft clear and compelling messages, and help guide the organization’s public voice – supporting the state’s economic development goals.
Principle Duties* Strategic communications planning and proactive messaging development
- Acting as GOEO’s Public Information Officer
- Communications counselor, collaborator, writer, and editor
- Extensive knowledge of Associated Press Style
- Stakeholder coordination
- GRAMA officer responsibilities and public-records awareness
- International relations and cross-cultural communication
- Media monitoring, analysis, and reporting
- Media relations, rapid response, and preparation of spokespersons
- Development of talking points, speeches, fact sheets, and presentations
- Development and/or maintenance of the GOEO’s communication strategy
- Development and/or maintenance of GOEO’s voice and tone of voice guidelines
- Leading crisis communications
Ideal Candidate
- A Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, media relations, or a related field is preferred.
- At least three years experience in communications, management, public policy, government relations, or a related field.
- Creative and effective communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across numerous media and platforms.
- Exceptional writing ability with AP Stylebook knowledge.
- The ability to exhibit confidence and professional diplomacy while effectively relating to people at all levels, internally and externally.
- Knowledge of the full range of media platforms, with demonstrated success in generating online and traditional media awareness among key influencers such as industry experts and news reporters.
- A proven track record of responding effectively and strategically to high-profile media inquiries.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, lead projects, meet multiple concurrent deadlines, organize time and priorities, and work well as a team member.
- An exceptionally high level of integrity, trust, accountability, and superior judgment to meet the needs of the GOEO team.
- Proficient — or willing to learn to become a master — at using Basecamp or other similar project management software.
- Familiar with some or all of these applications: Google Apps, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress, Salesforce, Agility PR (or other media distribution software).
- Ability to multitask and thrive in a deadline-driven environment.
- Must be able to take constructive feedback well, work collaboratively, and support a team of full-time communications and creative design professionals.
- Have the ability to oversee our office’s statewide customer experience initiative.
- Experience managing people.
