Job Description

BMWL is hiring a Social Media Manager to support organic social media strategy and content development for political and advocacy clients across the Bay Area. This position focuses exclusively on organic social media and plays a key role in shaping how campaigns and organizations communicate with their online communities.

The Social Media Manager will collaborate closely with BMWL’s Media and Client Management Teams to ensure that organic content aligns with broader messaging, persuasion goals and campaign timelines. This role is ideal for candidates who are creative, detail-oriented and energized by producing impactful content in fast-paced political environments.

Candidates must have strong content creation skills, excellent communication abilities and an understanding of how to build and sustain online communities. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, comfortable capturing content in the field and effective at managing multiple priorities.

This role is both strategic and hands-on: The Social Media Manager will independently manage the day-to-day execution of posting schedules, content deployment and engagement monitoring while also proactively recommending creative concepts, platform-specific strategies and opportunities to elevate campaign storytelling. They will bring forward new ideas, identify trends and help shape the digital voice of our clients, all while ensuring flawless execution.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganic Content Strategy and Planning

  • Create an organic social strategy for each client that reflects the campaign’s or advocacy effort’s outreach strategies and overall theory of the win/theory of change.
  • Evaluate platform performance regularly; identify what’s working and what’s not and adjust strategy, content mix and posting cadence accordingly.
  • Develop and maintain organic social schedules for 2–3 platforms per client. Platform selection will be based on client voice, goals and needs and may include TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky or X.
  • Create weekly content calendars that align with client goals, messaging and GOTV timelines, incorporating strategic recommendations where needed.
  • Coordinate with the Media Team to ensure organic content supports overall messaging, paid media plans and campaign milestones.

Content Creation

  • Conceptualize, produce and edit high-quality content including graphics, videos, photos and written posts.
  • Film and edit vertical videos for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
  • Draft engaging scripts, captions and on-screen text in alignment with campaign voice.
  • Adjust content to fit platform best practices, accessibility standards and engagement styles.
  • Candidate stays up to date and ahead of the curve on social media trends, trending topics and evolving strategies.

Community Engagement and Monitoring

  • Monitor comments, messages and conversations across platforms to identify engagement opportunities and protect brand integrity.
  • Respond promptly and professionally using approved messaging while maintaining each client’s voice.
  • Track audience sentiment and surface insights to the Media and Communications Teams to inform message development and content strategy.
  • Use engagement and monitoring tools including but not limited to Sprout Social, Sosha, ManyChat and Common Sense Empathy to track conversations and identify trends.
  • Manage and strategize use of Sprout Social listening, including setting up listening queries, monitoring conversation volume and sentiment, identifying shifts or risks and reporting actionable insights.
  • Identify organic influencer or micro-creator opportunities for amplification based on audience conversations and emerging trends.
  • Track emerging community conversations that could influence campaign message resonance and proactively flag implications for content and messaging.

Volunteer and Supporter Digital Amplification

  • Provide shareable content, language and guidance to volunteers, endorsers and coalition partners.
  • Create social media toolkits to support amplification efforts.
  • Assist campaigns in coordinating partner-driven online engagement.

Rapid Response

  • Monitor for misinformation, opposition messages or emerging online narratives.
  • Produce quick turnaround content in coordination with Communications.
  • Ensure responses align with approved messaging and campaign strategy.

Event Coverage and Production Support

  • Attend Bay Area events, press conferences and field activities to capture content - occasionally in the evening or on the weekend during peak campaign periods.
  • Support video and photo shoots with preparation, on-site assistance and post-production tasks.
  • Turn around event content quickly based on campaign needs.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Provide regular reports on content performance, audience growth and engagement trends.
  • Maintain accurate records of all organic posts and engagement metrics for reporting and compliance needs.

Collaboration with the Media Team

This role collaborates with the Media Team to ensure message alignment and coordinated execution across digital, print and communications channels. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in discussions on messaging, rollout timing and content needs.
  • Sharing insights on social trends and platform updates to inform strategy.
  • Supporting content needs that accompany digital, print or video assets.
  • Participating in media trainings and contributing social expertise.

This role does not manage or execute paid digital media.

Qualifications and ExperienceMinimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience managing TikTok and Meta platforms.
  • Proficiency with video editing tools such as CapCut or Adobe Premiere.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to capture content in the field at Bay Area events.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite.
  • Familiarity with Canva, Instagram, Facebook and other major platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, political science, digital media or a related field.
  • 2-4 years of experience in social media management, campaigns, advocacy or content production.
  • Familiarity with political or public affairs communications.
  • Ability to create simple animations or motion graphics.
  • Experience conducting interviews on camera (DTC or behind the camera).
  • Familiarity with Threads, Bluesky and X as tools for community building or organizing
  • Experience using social scheduling tools such as Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social or Later.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience and skill level. The expected range for this position is:

Social Media Manager: $80,000 - $95,000

BMWL is a hybrid work environment that requires staff to be in our Oakland, CA office two days per week. Prospective candidates must be able to make the regular commute on two days per week, including mandatory Mondays, and when special occasions require in-office work.
